For Milind Halbe explaining a severe “electrical” storm. Severe “electrical” storms at high mountain peaks are not unusual. In fact can be expected first because of the cold atmosphere which conceals the moisture in the air and that condition can then suddenly transform in to a severe storm. We are accustomed to seeing clouds develop slowly. First of all the energy in lightening is not electricity but the energy that produces heat. Electric energy and heat energy are very similar but behave differently. At high altitudes with cold temperatures massive clouds of heat laden moisture can exist without being visible because the water molecules are vaporized by the heat they have taken up. All it takes to set off the storm is a sudden discharge of some of the heat energy being carried by the unseen cloud. For example, when such a cloud nears a cold mountain peak some of the heat in the cloud transfers to that cold place. (Heat energy moves from hot to cold.) When that happens the cloud cools somewhat causing the moisture in the cloud to condense and become visible. Of course, that sets off a chain reaction of more heat transfer (lightening) and further cooling as the cloud discharges the heat energy it had taken up. Sometimes the heat discharge (lightening) covers a wide area all at one time. I have seen what appeared to be a mile in diameter discharge from a dust storm cloud. With all that cooling action, some of the condensed water freezes in the process and forms hail. This is one of the areas in physics that has not been understood because the scientists do not understand the phenomena of heat. That is one of the reasons I wrote the book. Next time, be alert for the signs that lead up to this type phenomena and react rapidly.
