For Veterans Day, would each of you spend a minute and do this: Think back to when you were 18 or 19 through age 21 or 22. Remember the dates you had, the road trips you may have taken, the sports events you watched, the jobs you held, classes you attended -- the fun you had and the progress you made for yourself. Now, realize that millions of our fellow citizens decided or agreed to spend those years of their lives in basic training, riding in cramped berths on ships, hauling munitions, walking through the rain in mud, crawling across fields or sneaking through forests; flying on uncomfortable loud transport craft, walking on isolated mountain roads not knowing whether an IED was waiting around the next bend; erecting concrete barriers in Baghdad, and much of it, while being shot at, bombed, having shells fired at you, or anti-aircraft fire; and then, after enduring years of that, you come home and realize that those of us who never did it cannot even begin to understand what it was like, and that far too many of us dont even care. War is awful, and should never happen. But it has happened, and whether we opposed the conflicts or not, the women and men who gave us years of their lives, their bodies and their lives themselves, deserve our gratitude and our support. We must always be mindful that the trillions we have spent on war are the easy costs to bear. The human cost freely given by millions of patriotic citizens are beyond calculation and compensation.
