For a word to mean something is similar in some way to a notion - TopicsExpress

For a word to mean something is similar in some way to a notion that a signpost points somewhere ; we can understand the meaning of a word just as we can read the signpost . But it does not make sense to ask what it is that words mean any more than to ask what it is p point to. It is not sense , that is to say , to ask IN GENERAL what words mean or signposts point to. It is sense only to ask What does THIS word mean? , What does THIS signpost point to? . - F.R. Palmer/Semantics
