For as long as I can remember I have been sun conscious, I have - TopicsExpress

For as long as I can remember I have been sun conscious, I have had to be - I am that pale. The idea of dealing with sunburn or feeling my skin burn has never really been appealing! I am the friend with the hat and suncream... In the past I have been mocked (in the most loving of ways) by friends and family for my excessive use of suncream and my need to reapply. Not to say I havent been burnt. I have been caught out in the sun, I have sunbaked on the odd occasion in my younger years (albeit wearing sun cream) and I have been too lazy to reapply. We live alot of our lives in the outdoors, its what we enjoy and since having children I have become more vigilent, not that I thought it was possible! I can honestly say my 6 year old daughter has never actually been pink. But. Here it is. I made a terrible decision before getting married in 2007. I used tanning beds at my local shopping centre approximately 10 times in search for the elusive tan. Prior to this I had been in a sunbed approximately 3 times which I thought would be a bit of FUN. Pft. At the time I was 26 and thought that it would be harmless, after all lots of people lie in the sun all the time! For hours! Whats a few sessions going to hurt? Yep. Did this cause my cancer? I dont know. But I do know now and more than most, how ignorant this was. It is something I will always regret. I also know people have used solariums for a much longer period than I did. If you have used them at all, please be extra cautious for me and get your skin checked. I have learnt that the damage you do to your skin is actually done years earlier than it shows. Did you know there is movement to completely ban Solariums in Australia? The levels of UV radiation emitted can be up to six times as strong as the midday sun! Find out more in this link below from sunsmart.au - I am finding this site very useful. So there you have it, my contradictory sun history. Obsessive suncream lover who used sunbeds for a short period! Thanks all, this has been a little more difficult than I had prepared for but ignorance is not bliss.
