(Perris, CA, September 2, 2014) It will be another night of “Motorized Mayhem” this Saturday, September 6th, when Perris Auto Speedway hosts “Night of Destruction” featuring Figure 8 Races, a Figure 8 Trailer Race, Democross and Spectator Racing. It will be the final time for fans to see the Figure 8 and Figure 8 Trailer races at the Riverside County racing facility until 2015. Spectator gates will open at 5:00 PM with the first race slated for 7:00. There will be an on track autograph and photo session for the fans beginning at 5:30. Two drivers who have dominated the Figure 8 classes will be attempting comebacks of sorts when the tricky intersection races take place on Saturday. Ken McWilliams of Menifee, who has dominated the Figure 8 Trailers the past few years, was involved in a violent crash in the Figure 8 main at the last event in June. In the same race, Norco’s Earl Cox Jr., who has won more Figure 8 races than any driver at the track and who had a bounty on him for any other driver who could win the main event, was taken out by another car. The other driver was immediately disqualified for taking Cox out. The McWilliams crash was one of the hardest hits ever seen at the track in its 19-season-history and it had an ironic twist. The other car involved was driven by fellow Menifee resident Bernie Hruska. McWilliams has known Hruska since he was a young child watching him from the stands at Ascot. “Bernie and my dad raced everywhere together forever,” McWilliams said on Monday night. “I have known him for as long as I can remember and he is a good friend. I think he is calling it quits after that crash.” Initially both of the friends were believed to have been injured more than they were from the explosive intersection meeting. It took several minutes for each driver to get out of his car. Hruska was taken to the hospital and McWilliams went the next morning at the urging of his wife Amber. “Bernie had a badly bruised chest,” the 33-year-old McWilliams said. “I was first told my ankle was fractured, but it ended up only being badly bruised. We were both very fortunate.” Not quite as fortunate was McWilliams familiar Camaro Figure 8 car that is painted up like one of the autos in the Disney movie “Cars.” It suffered extensive damage and was initially thought to be totaled. “It probably should have been scrapped,” laughed McWilliams who is a sale/account manager for a towing company in Ontario. “But, we thought it would be cool to try and put it back together. It has been hard and there has been a lot of issues, but it looks like we will make it. It is now “Frankencar.” If the final Figure 8 events of the 2014 campaign are not enough, the show will also include crazy Democross racing and Spectator Races. Democross is staged on the inner PAS quarter-mile track that is outfitted with obstacles including old boats, jet skis and massive tractor tires. It is an anything goes race where competitors can wreck other cars as they strive to be the first to the checkered flag. Like each of the Figure 8 races, Democross pays $500.00 to the winning driver. Spectator racing involves two cars on the track at a time. To avoid them crashing into each other, one starts in the middle of the front straightaway and the other starts in the middle of the back straightaway. The first car to complete two laps wins the race and much like drag racing, moves up the ladder in the competition. It goes until there are only two cars left and the winner of the final race collects the winner take all purse which is determined by the amount of entries. Anyone with a valid driver’s license, registration for the car they are racing and who has proof of insurance, can enter the Spectator Races. While Saturday’s Figure 8 events are the last of the 2014 campaign, the Democross and Spectator races will be a prelude to their season finale on October 11th during the annual Southern California Fair.
