For hardcore fans of the Beach Boys - and for anyone interested in how 60s pop hit records were made - I cannot recommend highly enough the Boys new iTunes-only release, KEEP AN EYE ON SUMMER: THE BEACH BOYS SESSIONS 1964. (Thanks to Gary Pig Gold for the recommendation.) The big shocker, for me, is how often Carl, Al and Dennis were actually playing on the original tracks, after all these years thinking the stuff was played 100% by The Wrecking Crew. Al plays fantastic, rollicking, dynamic, not-a-wasted-note bass on most of this album - alright Al! Unsung hit bassist! Anyway, check out this propulsive backing track, recorded New Years Day 1964. Dennys playing drums, with Hal Blaine on tambourine and overdubbed drum rolls. Murrys still around (ugh) but not for long.
