For lack of any other entertainment I watched The Monuments Men. Yes, despite my anti-war leftist politics I almost cried when art was recovered and when art was destroyed. Ive always had an extreme hatred of Nazis. I think it comes from watching the black and white war films on Channel 8 at 8:00 on many mornings before I entered school. Shock when I saw the flamethrowers taken to the art and thought about the people burned... Is art worth a persons life? Many have dedicated their existence to one art or another. When the work is destroyed the life of the artist truly ends. Art is humanitys noblest expression. Im still glad we let the Russians take Berlin. They lost over 20 million people, had their own art looted, and werent going to demonstrate any mercy to Nazis and those that supported Nazis. Street war was brutal. The Soviets paid a heavy toll for Germany. I sometimes think that I avoid a trip to Europe for fear I might accidentally be cordial to some ancient Nazi, their spawn, or collaberators. There are countless museums Id love to see. I get an almost spiritual feeling when I am standing before a great piece.
