For my family and friends who ask about my IH, read on......this is from a teacher on a FB Support Page I belong to. I relate to everything she says. As a teacher, I know that the key to help others understand something, is to first fully understand it yourself. Being diagnosed with a chronic and rare sleep disorder that I hardly understand myself is uncharted territory for me and presents some real challenges. Why cant I effectively explain a disease I live and struggle with daily? Even the medical community does not fully understand it - hence the name Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH). If this sleep disorder is the criminal, robbing me of my quality of life day after day. why cant I better identify the suspect to others? Most people think it is not being able to sleep (insomnia) or just being tired as everyone gets in todays world. I cant even seem to compare it effectively to narcolepsy - which people have at least heard of, even though they may not truly understand it since it isnt always accurately portrayed in the movies. The top physician and researcher for Idiopathic Hypersomnia (and my hero/hope for effective treatment someday), Dr. David Rye of Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, may not just be the best physician and researcher for Idiopathic Hyoersomnia, but also the best teacher. He simply states: Narcolepsy is being seized by sleep. Hypersomnia is being consumed by sleep. Short and to the point, maybe I can take a teaching lesson from him! For those who have not dozed off reading this post, class dismissed!
