For those of you interested in seeing the results of the survey I previously posted relating to heroin, here they are. This is only a small portion of my project...and also a rough draft so please excuse any errors. The recent heroin related deaths of popular actors Cory Monteith and Philip Seymour Hoffman have brought the public’s attention to two very important facts; the use of heroin in the United States is on the rise and rising with it are the number of heroin related deaths. It is my belief that we are experiencing a heroin epidemic. I am currently enrolled at Massasoit in the human services transfer program. My goal after graduating from Massasoit is to go on to get my bachelor’s degree and then my master’s degree so that I can become an addiction counselor. I am extremely passionate about helping those struggling with addiction in any way that I can. Although I have never used the drug, it has had a major impact on my life. I wanted to see if heroin has impacted the lives of others (users and non-users) and also to find out if they agree with me in my belief that we are experiencing an epidemic. I posted a survey on Facebook and also asked some family to email my survey to their co-workers. In the end, 59% of the responses came from Facebook and the other 41% came from email. I have listed below each question that was on the survey followed by the response. What is your gender? Male- 36% Female-64% What is your age? 18-24 /7% 25-34 /57% 35-44 /12% 45-54 /16% 55-64 /7% 65-74 /1% Have you ever used heroin? 95% said no, they have never used heroin. 5% said yes, they have used heroin. Do you know someone who has used heroin? 86% said yes, they know someone who has used heroin. 14% said no, they do not know anyone who has used heroin. Do you know 3 or more people who have used heroin? 62% of people said yes, they know 3 or more people who have used heroin. 38% said they do not know 3 or more people who have used heroin. Do you know someone who has fatally overdosed from heroin? 62% of people said yes, they know someone who has fatally overdosed on heroin. 38% of people said no, they do not know anyone who has fatally overdosed on heroin. Do you know three or more people who have fatally overdosed on heroin? 35% of people said yes, they know 3 or more people who have fatally overdosed on heroin. 65% said no, they do not know 3 or more people who have fatally overdosed on heroin. Do you believe we are experiencing a heroin epidemic? 92% of people said yes, they do believe we are experiencing a heroin epidemic. 8% of people said no, they do not believe we are experiencing a heroin epidemic.
