For those of you reading this for the first time, there is an active lava flow entering the town of Pahoa Hawaii. A lot could have been done ahead of time to divert the flow. But due to incompetent government leadership and Native Hawaiian religious beliefs, there has been tension between residents as the flow enters town and begins to burn homes and properties. The flow just slowed down as of today (10/31). With the flow suddenly slowing down, now is the time for rational thinking and the realization that human lives, livelihoods and personal property should be top priority. With all due respect to cultural religious beliefs, a responsible government must put people first ahead of naturals forces when it comes to the safety of citizens. For updates, photos and videos, go to hvo.wr.usgs.gov/multimedia and bigislandvideonews/ This is the perfect time to take action that will cut off the supply of fresh lava entering Pahoa and prepare for any flows that may continue eastward and northeastward around Pahoa. This can be done in 2 sensible steps: #1. Create a diversion by BLOCKING the flow in the narrow gully area west of Cemetery Rd and in strategic locations all along the flow west to Puuoo. Blocking of the flow can be done by areal bombardment of the flow above the tube to collapse it and/or by dropping large rock or concrete objects into the heart of the flow. This will disrupt the flow, cause a stall and eventually change its course. If done wisely, the flow can be diverted northward into the wide empty area between the flow and Ainaloa. #2. This diversion provides plenty of time for bulldozing embankments that will guide the flow east across the highway and through less populated area between the highway and the ocean. You have all seen how quickly that man in the flows path built up a berm to protect his property and how small barriers build by others have guided the lava flow. Any dense forest along the way should be flatten with bulldozers so the lava flow does NOT stall , inflate and widen. Homes that may be in the diverted flows path can be protected with barriers similar to the one the smart guy in Pahoa built. 3. A third and perhaps better solution would be to blast open the SW corner of the vent to allow the lava to flow into the ocean as it had been doing for many years. What better way to spend tax payers dollars instead of just issuing daily reports, taking aerial photos and paying for extra police work. Governments in Italy, Iceland and Japan take similar steps to protect citizens form lava flows. Hawaii needs to step out of the Dark Ages and join the modern world. To respect those with religious beliefs for Pele, they should be allowed to perform a blessing over the areas of the flow where diversion will take place. This will respectfully inform Pele that we only want to kindly escort her around our homes and property. Its much better that fighting, finger pointing, arguing and bickering at each other at town meetings. Its time for all involved and for government to work together and show our humanity in a positive way instead of going for each others throats while the lava flows destroy our homes.
