For those of you that do not personally know me, I have other addictions besides Chickens & Tupperware. I am a canning addict. Even in this area I have enablers. To most of you this is nothing new but because I was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, I am a toddler in terms of years in the south. So, bare with me and my fascination. I went over to some friends/family and instead of it being only a fig picking for me, it turned into canning jars, a truck load worth plus more to pick up. Yes! I am so very appreciative but even more so that the individual giving me the jars, who is a sprite 73 years old, gave something that is even more precious than canning jars. She took me through the world of canning lids and techniques and when I not only got to see the original lid types but was given one, knowing the lid I held in my hand was 100 years old gave me pause. Just standing there and holding it really made me think about the times that people lived in and knowing they were hard in comparison to todays fast and disposable everything. Looking at this jar lid told me one thing mostly everything designed today is done in order to keep us spending money on replacement. Sure! Many will argue that somethings cost more to make. I can assure you, it will cost more for me over the lifetime of owning it. An example, we are familiar with the ring and lid system that we use to can. A hundred years ago a lid made lasts until this very day, as long as the glass piece inside the lid does not break. All that is needed is a gasket. Amazing! One day I will locate an original green Mason jar (not a reproduction) and proudly display it in my home always remembering the kind lady who gave that lid to me. Thank you.
