Ford Edge SUV officially revealed Mondeo-based Ford Edge SUV unveiled: 2.0-litre TDCi engine will develop either 188bhp or 207bhp Ford has taken the wraps off the all-new Ford Edge SUV, set to arrive in UK showrooms next year. And it’ll be the jewel in Ford’s SUV crown, designed to sit above the Focus-based Kuga and Fiesta-based EcoSport in the line-up. The Edge is already on sale in the US, but has not previously been offered in the UK. However, as part of Ford’s global strategy, OneFord, we’re seeing more models make the trip across the Atlantic – with the Mustang another example. The Edge is based around the same platform as the new Mondeo – due here in September – and retains the slab-sided styling of the Edge concept unveiled at last year’s LA Motor Show. A gaping front grille and huge 20-inch alloy wheels amplify its muscular stance, while full LED front and rear lights give an upmarket feel. From launch buyers will be able to choose between Trend, Sport and Titanium trim levels, with Ford predicting over 80 per cent of buyers will opt for the range-topping variant. It is also possible that a more premium Vignale variant could be added to the range, which would join the forthcoming Mondeo and S-Max Vignale models. Ford will reserve Vignale badge for only its most premium vehicles. Ford is hopeful of being able to tempt SUV buyers away from the likes of the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60. More head and shoulder room than both its main rivals will go some way into achieving that and surprisingly the Edge also offers more passenger space than larger SUVs such as the Audi Q7 and VW Touareg. Under the bonnet Ford will offer only the 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi Diesel engine, but in two states of tune. The entry-level engine develops 188bhp and 400Nm of torque and has a six-speed manual gearbox, while the more powerful version gets 207bhp and 450Nm of torque plus a six-speed automatic transmission. Both versions will be four-wheel drive only. Ford claims the Edge will be comfortable and good to drive, with carefully tuned springs and multi-link suspension at the rear. A raft of tech, including Cross Traffic Alert and inflatable rear seatbelts, will be offered. The Edge is likely to cost around £30,000 when it arrives next year and is likely to remain Fords flagship SUV model as senior Ford officials dispelled doubt about a larger seven-seat model being added to the lineup.
