Forget Charles Lindberghs solo flight across the Atlantic. Lt Elmer Stone a U.S. Coast Guard pilot and a six man Navy crew made the flight from Trepassey Bay Newfoundland to the Azores in a Navy Curtiss flying boat in May of 1919, eight years earlier. Stone was a WW I test pilot choosen to pilot the Navy plane, call sign NC4. Just one more example that Coasties can do it right. From Float Planes and Flying Boats by Capt Robert B. Workman.
