Former Appeals Court Judge Mohd Noor Abdullah has urged non-Malays to repay the past “sacrifice” made by the Malays in allowing Bahasa Melayu (BM) to be written in the Roman script for the sake of national unity. According to him, BM was originally written in Jawi but the Malays allowed the Romanised version be used to make it easier for the other races to learn it as the national language. “The non-Malays must repay this sacrifice by learning BM, and using BM every day,” Mohd Noor (centre in photo) said during a lecture in Kuala Lumpur today. ..." Scholars could tell us, what was the objective in Romanisation of the Malay Language. Would it helpful to the development of the language? How about Bahasa Indonesia, was it in Jawi? Was it Romanised to help others to learn the language? Or perhaps it is merely for the development of the language. Main land China Romanised the Chinese phonetics, Han Yu Pin Yin，it may help many non-Chinese to pick up the language. However, it is never a problem for many others who learn Chinese and Mandarin in Taiwan, where Zhu Yin Fu Hao [A sympolic phonectics system], a non Romanised phonetics is still the main phonetic system in learning Mandarin pronunciation. Language is a key asset for all of us. It is important for communication. China, India and Indonesia are three important market place, we Malaysia are lucky to have English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil spoken citizen, they would be the important human resources for Malaysia. All these languages are important assets to our country, Malaysia. Please stop all the useless argument, put up some constructive one to enhance the learning of the said languages. There is no such thing as one language is more superior than others.
