Opening Reception on Nov. 21st, 2014, 6 pm to 8 pm. -- speakeasyartcenter Julius J. Rudnay (1907 - 1975) immigrated to the United States from Hungary in 1910, at age three, growing up in the St. Louis area. Julius took an interest in music, playing the Saxophone and Clarinet traveling with many Jazz and Dance bands, including the Paul Whiteman Orchestra. He also studied Aeronautical Engineering, taking positions with various firms before making a career at McDonnell Douglas, working on Project Gemini, also playing an instrumentally vital role in the F-101 Voodoo production, a supersonic jet fighter that was the precursor to the famed McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. Early on Julius took a serious interest in photography, entering and winning at numerous Local and State contests. His wife Violet G. (1911 - 1997) also shared his deep photography interest, together they took hundreds of photographs, covering many topics and genres. Julius and Violets daughter Julie, eventually made her way to Peoria, living in the area for 30 years, where she inherited and preserved the collection. Although various photos have been shown, indeed several have been individually awarded and recognized, this exhibit marks the first times that the collection has been shown in its entirety. The Julius and Violet Rudnay Photo collection is quite vast, requiring several showings emphasizing differing themes. The Peoria Historical Society and the Speakeasy Arts Center have curated and divided things by topic, Small Town/Rural, Artsy, Industry, People/Portraits, Animals and Urban/Architecture. The first showing will emphasize Small Town Americana, whimsical, introspective and landscape views of rural America during late 30s, 40s and early 50s.
