Four nights ago a young man pulled a gun on me as I walked back - TopicsExpress

Four nights ago a young man pulled a gun on me as I walked back from a late night rehearsal. He blitzed me from across the street. He had a bandana on so I couldnt see his face. He told me to get on the ground. I didn’t comply. I backed up and attempting to convince him that I had nothing of value and taking my life wasn’t worth the empty wallet and old iPhone I had on me. After a stand off of 4 minutes he let me go without taking anything. I believe I convinced him of the futility in choosing me as a victim. I try to avoid saying anything political on Facebook, but I feel sharing this story is an important example for a greater national conversation. Today I heard about two police officers shot in NYC. Lately I’ve heard about the police shooting innocent people. I’ve heard about school shootings. I’ve heard about mass shootings in movie theaters. I’ve heard about mentally ill individuals shooting government officials... All of these acts of violence have involved a very unforgiving, unpredictable, high stakes weapon. The gun. I don’t have a solution. But I do know four nights ago I wouldn’t have been safer if I was carrying a firearm. If my assailant wanted to kill me he would have, and my hypothetical firearm intended for self-defense would have done nothing to protect me.
