Four years ago, A sweet mini, Gracie, joined Last Stop Horse Rescue and was carrying a foal. Several months later we were able to experience a real miracle when Gracie gave birth to a filly, we named Little Grace. It was 10 days after she was born that suddenly Gracie developed symptoms of foaming at the mouth, tremors, locked legs and locked jaw. We had never experienced anything like this. We rushed her to Foxcroft Veterinary Services, PA where Dr Ron Miles met us in the middle of the night, with 10 day old baby, Little Grace with us. Gracie was in such bad shape that we said our goodbyes, left her there thinking she wouldnt make it until morning. We were prepared to bottle feed her baby. Dr Miles discussed Gracies condition with the rest of the staff and it was discovered that Gracie had a critically low calcium level. After several hours of giving her calcium we were able to bring her home in the morning. Nonie and I said at that time that someday we would be able to share this experience with someone else. That someday arrived this morning. I have followed a rescue in Ohio, ROPES run by Stacie Ropes. A rescue that both Nonie and I believe in. Indy a sweet rescue miniature horse came to this rescue carrying a foal. They too were able to experience this miracle of birth. Cowboy is now a little over a week and doing great. Momma was doing great until this morning. Stacie asked for prayers..saying vet was called and Indy was in the middle of colic and was very very sick. I remembered 4 years ago thinking the same thing...colic but nothing we did for Gracie worked. I sent the rescue a message, sharing our experience with the calcium deficiency. My message did reach Stacie and she insisted that the vet who was at their barn draw labs for calcium level. He felt it was Plant toxicity but Stacie shared with him our message, our experience and he agreed to check calcium. I received a message a short time later.. Stacie Ropes ..Bingo baby! Jeans meeting the vet right now to pick up more calcium, iv bags. (hes on another emergency). We are going to administer ourselves since Indy has a port. Her labs showed dangerously low calcium, life threatening if not treated aggressively. Laststophorserescue JChorsefarm....you probably just saved our little mare. I love you more now than even before. Indys labs were pulled instantly, then we went to Ivs immediately after. So her labs are true. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you (heart) ! Indys calcium level was 4. Normal is 11.5. Her vet informed her that this is the first time he has experienced seeing calcium levels this critically low. Dr Miles said the same to Nonie and me when he tested Gracie. Indy is still clinging to her life...but she is improving as the bags of IV calcium go into her. Sharing this with all of you today. There might be a moment when these words might help another...
