Free food – save a life. In case you missed it, last - TopicsExpress

Free food – save a life. In case you missed it, last Thursday, 17th July, was the grand opening of the new Nanna Mexico restaurant in the heart of Cambridge - 29 Petty Cury. The idea of the day was for people to enjoy a free lunch and donate what they felt it was worth with all proceeds going to Magpas Lifesavers, a local specialist helicopter medical team. Last year, Luis’ son Zac received life-saving treatment from the Helimedix Paramedics. We were delighted to have Dr. Mark Glover one of the amazing Helimedix Paramedics to officially open the restaurant, along with the Magpas fund raising team. So, how much could we raise? The sun was shining, town was busy and the team did a great job of spreading the ‘free lunch – save a life’ message to everyone who passed the doors of the restaurant. The celebrations began with traditional dancing from The Cambridge University Mexican Society, their beautifully bright costumes swishing to the upbeat music. Shoppers, workers and tourists alike wandering through Petty Cury stopped to listen, enjoy the music and dance and to see what was going on. In what seemed like no time at all, the queue for the ‘free lunch’ extended out through the doors and along Petty Cury – and we got down to the task of wrapping our infamous ‘big ass burritos’ as fast as possible. We served free food from 11.30am -2pm to everyone that came and waited so patiently in the queue, and their thirst was also quenched thanks to the wonderful Bookers Cash and Carry who donated a selection of soft drinks to support the cause. With a huge thanks to our loyal customers, many of whom were extra-ordinarily generous, we are thrilled to announce that we raised more than our target of £1000! Including donations made by customers who wanted to come but didn’t have time to wait in line, and a whopping cheque from the families of Zac’s school, Barton CofE (VA) Primary, we raised a grand total of £1323. This will pay for at least two Magpas emergency helicopter outings, so it could save two more lives, and the owner of Nanna Mexico knows just how precious that gift is. With a huge thanks to all of you who took the time to come along. Hasta luego amigos – see you again soon!
