The peace-loving Nations must make a concerted effort in opposition to those violations of treatise and those ignorings of humane instincts which today are creating a state of InterNational Anarchy and instability from which there is no escape through mere isolation or neutrality. (10-5-1937 Quarantine Speech) ...AND TO ASSUME AMONGST THE POWERS OF THE EARTH... We too, born to Freedom and Believing in Freedom are Willing to fights to maintain Freedom. We and all others who Believe an deeply as we do would rather die on our feet than live on our knees. In future days which we seek to make secure we look forward to a World Founded upon Four Essential Human Freedoms: The First --- is the Freedom of Speech and Expression... Everywhere in the World. The Second --- is the Freedom of every Person to Worship God in His own way - Everywhere in the World. The Third --- is the Freedom from want which translated in World terms means economic understandings which will secure to every Nation a healthy Peace Time life for its Inhabitants - everywhere in the World. The Forth --- is the Freedom from Fear which, translated into World terms means a world wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no Nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor - anywhere in the World. ,,,WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF EVIDENT... We must scrupulously guard the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties of all our Citizen, whatever their background. (1-20-41 Third Inaugural) Sometime the threat to popular Government comes from political interest, sometimes from economic interests, sometimes we have to beat off all of them together. But the challenge is always the same - whether each generation facing its own circumstances can summon the practical devotion to attain and retain the greatest good for the greatest number which this government of the people was created to asure. For action has been takened within the Three-way Framework of the Consitution of the U.S. The coordinated branches of Government continue freely to function. The Bill of Rights remain inviolate. The freedom of elections is wholly maintained. Prophets of the downfall of American Democracy have seen their dire predictions come to naught. Democracy is not dying, We know it because we have seen it revive -- and grow. We know it cannot die -- because it is built on the unhampered initiative of individual men and women joined together in a common enterprise -- an enterprise undertaken and carried through by the free expression of a free majority. (1-20-1941 Third Inaugural) ...BUT WHEN A LONG TRAIN OF ABUSES AND USURPATIONS PURSUING INVARIABLLY THE SAME OBJECT EVINCES A DESIGN TO REDUCE THEM UNDER ABSOLUTE DESPOTISM... We Americans of Today together with Our Allies, are passing through a period of Supreme Test. It is a test of Our Courage - of Our Resolve - of Our Wisdom - Our Essential Democracy. If we meet that test - successfully and honorably - we shall perform a service of historic importance... (1-20-1945 Fourth Inaugural) ...IT IS THEIR RIGHT ...IT IS THEIR DUTY ...TO THROW OFF SUCH GOVERNMENT... Almighty God: Our Sons ..., this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve Our Republic, Our Religion, and Our Civilization, and to set free a suffering Humanity ... lead them straight and true, give strength to their Arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in the Faith. They will need Thy Blessing ... by Thy Grace, and the Righteous of Our Cause, Our Sons will triumph. (Prayer on D-Day 1944) ...AND PROVIDE NEW GUARDS FOR THEIR FUTURE SECURITY... We shall work for a just and honorable peace , a durable peace, as today we work and fight to total victory in war.
