Freedom of speech is very important, and this tradition of free expression and open debate is a huge asset. Indias democracy has allowed a huge and incredibly diverse country to live together, largely peacefully, and has helped foster a sense of nationhood by giving everybody a voice and a share in the country. I also believe in the concept of secularism as an important binding principle of Indian democracy, even if it has not always been practised properly. Fairly obviously, the exploitation of caste and communal divisions for votes, the corruption that stems from campaign finance, and the standards of behaviour and debate in Parliament are major concerns.
