Friday 23rd January, 5.15pm - Falklands 250 years Ceremony at Victory Green In January 1765 Commodore Byron, accompanied by the Captains of the HMS Dolphin and HMS Tamar, went ashore on Saunders Island and raised the British flag claiming the Falkland Islands for the Crown of Great Britain. As part of events to commemorate this moment in our history 250 years ago, tomorrow (Friday, 23rd January) at 5.30pm there will be a short ceremony held on Victory Green, Stanley. The Falkland Islands flag will be raised by an Member of the Legislative Assembly assisted by 9th generation Islanders, and the flag of Great Britain will be raised by a representative of the Royal Navy. Members of the Falkland Islands Defence Force will then fire four shots from the saluting guns to represent the volley fired on the occasion 250 years ago. To view events the public are advised to gather at Victory Green by 5.15pm. The section of Ross Road between Villiers Street and Dean Street will be closed while the ceremony takes place.
