Friday Fact: Got Hummingbirds? You’re most likely seeing Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in this part of the country. They have green to golden green feathers on their backs and crowns. Males have a distinct red-orange blaze on their throats that sometimes looks black depending on the angle you observe them from. Summer is spent breeding in eastern North America. In the fall, these little sparkplugs migrate to Central America. Many of them cross the Gulf of Mexico in a single flight. On average, they beat their wings about 53 times per second. They build their nests (about 2 inches across and 1 inch deep) from thistle and dandelion down held together with delicate but extremely durable and elastic strands of spider silk.
