Friends of National Arboretum seeks Executive Director FONA (fona.org) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership organization with the mission to preserve and enhance the U.S. National Arboretum (USNA), a 446 acre green space in Northeast Washington DC where trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants are cultivated for scientific and educational purposes. USNA is part of the US Department of Agriculture. As USNA’s primary private partner, we currently work to provide valuable financial and volunteer support for this national treasure through five main focus areas: · Environmental preservation: FONA works with USNA and local agencies to protect and restore the waterways that run through the Arboretum and empty into the Anacostia River. · Plant research: FONA provides financial support for USNA fellows and interns to research the development of drought and disease resistant plants, flowers and trees. · Protecting the urban green space: FONA provides financial and volunteer support to protect the USNA’s world class plant collections. · Education: FONA supports the USNA’s educational offerings, which include collection tours, curator lectures, and expert workshops. In addition, FONA provides its own public programming, the Washington Youth Garden. WYG maintains a one-acre organic educational garden located on the grounds of the USNA and offers year-round science and nutrition education through school partnerships, field trips, a high-school internship program and family gardening. · Community outreach: FONA works to raise awareness about the USNA among key stakeholders, opinion leaders, and the general public, including two major fundraising events each year on the USNA grounds. FONA’s Board of Directors seeks to transform the organization into one that provides substantially more support for USNA and is in the early stages of a long term capital campaign. We are looking for a visionary, creative and strategic new leader who can lead FONA to this higher level. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Board of Directors through the Chair, the Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the overall fundraising, program development, and operational success of FONA. The ED works in partnership with the Board of Directors and staff to ensure that the FONA achieves sustainable results in supporting the work of USNA. The ED holds primary responsibility for developing and implementing strategies to increase fundraising to ensure that FONA supports its mission, particularly to enhance the visitor experience. The incoming leader will · manage the organizations operations, including fundraising, outreach, and the Washington Youth Garden, · help develop and advance strategic goals approved by the Board, · build and enhance relationships with members, donors, the USNA Director and staff, and other key stakeholders, and · represent the organization in outreach to the community. The ED also has day-to-day management of the staff, budgeting, finance, and board relations. Professional Experience/Qualifications: · Excellent oral, written, listening and interpersonal skills; in particular, the ability to communicate well with and relate to donors, members, key stakeholders, volunteers, staff and others. Experience with using social media as a communication tool—preferred. · Proven fundraising skills at the seven figure plus level, and demonstrated success in the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual donors, foundations, and strategic partners. · Experience working collaboratively and effectively with the board of directors of a nonprofit organization, particularly engaging them in the fundraising process. · Experience in leading, training and mentoring staff. · Experience in planning, budgeting, non-profit finance, and marketing. · A Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university—required; an advanced degree(s) and a record of continuing professional development—preferred. · A minimum of 8 years demonstrated nonprofit development/management experience. · An interest in or experience with horticulture issues—preferred.
