From Bishop Wester in Rome: The main theme of the Congress I have been attending in Rome is cooperation and development in the pastoral care of migrants. Some of the themes are the migrant family in the context of the diaspora, migrants as partners and the dignity of youth migrants. Speakers have included the Italian Interior Minister, church officials and others representing immigrant services. I had the opportunity to specifically talk about young migrants traveling across the southern U.S. border from Central American countries. My presentation examined what is pushing them from their homes and what is pulling them to the United States. I discussed the conditions they encounter as they migrate and explored how the Catholic Church could better address their needs.Tomorrow I will head to Sicily and Malta to personally observe the conditions of migrants attempting to get into Europe from North Africa. Jesuit Relief Services will be our guides.
