From Dr. Campbell: Illness seems to be running rampant in our community right now and fever seems to be a prominent feature for nearly all of these illnesses. Its easy as a parent to see a number on the thermometer and panic--that high fever makes your child feel lousy and you fear that the fever will cause something bad to happen. The good news is that fever by itself WILL NOT harm your child. That fever is a way for your childs body to fight off infection and even at 105 your child will not suffer damage because of that fever. Treat your child, not the number on the thermometer. Use acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (advil, motrin) to make your child more comfortable and try a luke warm bath and/or a cool cloth to the forehead. The goal isnt necessarily to take the temperature all the way back to normal but to make your child feel better. Even a 1 degree decrease in temperature is an improvement. We know those fevers make you worry...thats a very real and natural parental instinct. When you see that high number on the thermometer pause, take a big breath, and start working to make your child more comfortable. If your child is lethargic despite the fever coming down, has fever lasting longer than three days, refuses to drink, or looks very ill to you then call us! Below youll find a fantastic article to help you learn more!
