From Kids Need To Read: We need your help! Why? Because the Kids-N-Peace program (kidsneedtoread.org/peace) is going so well at Children First Academy, a school for homeless and impoverished children (see latest quote below), we hope to establish some volunteer chapters around the nation next year to spread this program beyond Phoenix/Mesa. Perhaps some of our Browncoat/Fillion fan brethren will be interested in becoming KNTR chapters. It would be a natural fit, given the history of KNTRs origin as a volunteer project springing forth from the fandom! Literacy groups could help, too. We need a lot of help to pull off chapter expansion though. Perhaps those of you on Twitter can send a tweet to our co-founder, Nathan Fillion (@NathanFillion), to share your thoughts on the vital nature of KNTRs work with disadvantaged children. It is important to reinforce his support—Nathan receives so many requests to help various organizations—so please share this plea with other fans to let Nathan know his foundation is well-appreciated. This is how we did things in the beginning—Ninja strikes! :) Also, please spread the word among fans about our Nathan Fillion Legacy Donation Page: kidsneedtoread.org/nathanfillion/ We need to build up our funding significantly to begin chapter work. It would seem fitting to do so in Nathan Fillions honor. Now for the latest quote from Todd Kemmerer, counselor at Children First Academy—Tempe (The folks at Elephants Remember Joplin will certainly enjoy the first paragraph! Thanks so much for your groups continuing efforts on behalf of KNTR and the Kids-N-Peace program!): I was wondering if you would be able to get anymore of the knit animals for me. I am almost out and the kids have really responded to them when I use them for an interventions and coping strategies. I have even used a few of them for behavior contracts that the students work hard to get. They are very popular!! The 5-8 graders are still working on the Life Strategies book. The readings have really propelled the kids into talking about bullying and sometimes we spend a whole class period just discussing a paragraph in the book. I also just read the book One. I started with 2nd grade and used the book to do a play with the students. They had a blast. I then decided to use the book with all the grades 3-8. It was hysterical seeing the 8th graders acting as the colors and reading the words out loud. It ties in great with the bully theme and it reinforced the strategies we have been talking about in the book. Again, having access to these great books has been a fantastic resource and the kids are really responding to them. Thanks so much for what you do.
