From Rob Shearer: This is a stunning and quite moving memorial for the WW1 Commonwealth dead. One poppy for every Commonwealth soldier who was killed in World War One. 888,246 thousand ceramic poppies, placed in the moat around the Tower of London. The US killed in the war were 116, 708. But it is puzzling that the WaPo reporter makes no mention of the famous WW1 poem by a Canadian officer who was killed - Lt. Col. John McCrae. His poem is the reason that the poppy became the remembrance flower throughout the commonwealth. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
