From The Newark Advocate: I am writing to encourage members of my community to vote “yes” for the Heath City Schools levy that will be on the Nov. 5 ballot. Education itself is changing at a pace that requires school districts to constantly review their financial best practices. School systems are routinely faced with unfunded state and federal mandates. This is just one of the reasons why, on average, school systems in Ohio place a levy on the ballot every three to five years. Heath City Schools have not participated in lavish spending. School funds have been taken, not spent. We must understand the difference. Heath’s state funding has been dramatically cut for several years. The administration has worked hard to reduce spending by streamlining processes, reducing personnel, cutting expenses, and consolidating resources as much as possible, while continuing to meet educational needs. Heath City Schools are at a tipping point, beyond which I believe there could be a decline. If this levy does not pass, the district will be starved of funding needed for basic classroom instruction, special classes, sports programs and extracurricular activities. These are an integral part of a student’s education. I understand this vote is of a political nature for some. I urge folks to understand those politics reach far beyond our district and our city. I encourage everyone to have your questions answered with facts. Contact a board member or committee chair. Ask for financial information, to see the needs assessment and question the superintendent. Attend a committee meeting or board meeting and be an informed voter. Great schools create and sustain great communities, and that benefits all of us — not just families with children. Please vote “yes” on the upcoming Heath City Schools levy. Changing the lives of our students begins with your “yes” vote. Jamie Haidet, Heath
