From the CA this morning: This story seems to be the blueprint that SCS aka Memphis City Schools has always operated under. What part of public schools does he not understand. Germantown From your March 20 article about the capital funds that Shelby County Schools is abruptly requesting: “ ‘There’s an urgency we have heard from different county commissioners,’ Supt. Dorsey Hopson told the school board Tuesday night. ‘If the County Commission approves this ask, there will not be an additional cost of ADA,’ or average daily attendance.” What Hopson said is that if the commission allocates capital spending funds for schools prior to July 1, all the money goes to SCS. After July 1, it will have to split the money with the suburban districts based on student census. For the commission to not only agree with, but also to initiate this course of action is reprehensible and morally repugnant. It has a duty to keep schools in good working order. That includes all public schools anywhere in the county, not just SCS schools. There are many deferred maintenance needs and capital projects that have been on hold for years. To abruptly make funding decisions specifically to exclude schools that will not be part of SCS next year is abhorrent. This thrust on the part of the County Commission continues a pattern of urban animosity, hostility and bitterness that residents of Germantown and other suburbs have grown increasingly weary of, with little choice but to accept. I wish our County Commission was a body that, above all else, together represented all the residents of Shelby County, working toward a common goal. Instead, we have each commissioner representing his/her district individually first, then the urban machine, and then the entire county comes somewhere far after that, if at all. The vitality, desirability and very future of Shelby County are suffering for this fractured, discriminatory leadership.
