From the Dispatch, 1886: 1886 Change in business The Mortlake Shoeing Forge has passed from S. Brookman to A. J. Brookman and Co. New Chemist G. T. Rastrick, chemist, announced that he had opened in premises next to A. Stewart and Co. Dr Sweetnam could be consulted at the Dispensary every morning. Births and Deaths Thirty-nine births and 18 deaths were registered for the year 1885. Crop in Gardens The first crop having been taken off the land in the Botanic Reserve, the holders have commenced ploughing again, with a view to having another crop. Bitten by dog While delivering letters, Messenger Cameron was bitten by a dog and should have laid up but the Government would not provide relief. The paragraph went on to say ‘If the messenger had been laid up would our Government have wired the P.M. to shut up and deliver the telegrams himself or would he have to adopt the suggestion of cooeeing and waving a flag to attract attention in the township?’ Baker and Restaurant W.A. Davis opened a baking business and restaurant at the corner of Townsend and Webster streets. Meals 1/-; tea or coffee, 6d; temperance drinks, 4d per glass. Larrikinism On Sunday night after Mr Rastrick had closed his shop, certain youths came along and totally obliterated the notice on the door intimating where chemist was to be found. Old Resident Departs Mr John Phillips, one of the oldest residents of the district, has taken his departure for the Heytesbury forest. Mr Phillips arrived in Mortlake before there was a house in the township and actually built the first chimney in the main street. The exodus of this family from the town is the more particularly worthy of notice on account of the fact that Mr Phillips son, Frederick, was the first white male child registered in Mortlake. [Research reveals that Frederick John Phillips was the only child of John Frederick Phillips and Jane Cook and that his birth was registered at Mount Shadwell in 1854. CP]
