By Dann Denny 812-331-4350 | ddenny@heraldt The Community Kitchen of Monroe County will have plenty of donated turkeys this year for its 30th annual Thanksgiving dinner, but still needs people to donate canned green beans and other canned vegetables, cream of mushroom soup, fruit cocktail, French-fried onions, stuffing/dressing mix, and dessert pies. Grocery store gift cards and financial donations are also welcome. Food donations will be accepted at 1515 S. Rogers St. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 11 a.m.to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Financial contributions can be mailed to the Community Kitchen, P.O. Box 3286, Bloomington, IN 47402. “Many of us have fond holiday memories of festive gatherings with fantastic meals, and we do our best to make that the reality for those who are not able to do so for themselves,” said Vicki Pierce, the Kitchen’s executive director. “Food donations really help us create that traditional Thanksgiving meal for our neighbors in need.” More than 30 volunteers will assist the kitchen staff prepare and serve meals on Thanksgiving Day, and all volunteer shifts are currently full, but the kitchen still needs volunteers for many of its regular shifts in December and January. Those interested in signing up for volunteer shifts are asked to call 332-0999. Those interested in delivering meals to the homebound, or who would like to request delivery of a meal on Thanksgiving, should call Laura Kray at the Area 10 Agency on Aging at 876-3383 (ext.553). This year on Thanksgiving Day, the kitchen will offer hot meals from 3 to 6 p.m. at its main facility at 1515 S. Rogers St. and its facility at 1100 W. 11th St. A vegetarian meal option will be available at the Rogers Street location. Carry-out Thanksgiving meals will be available at both locations. In addition, the Community Kitchen will team up with the Hoosier Hills Food Bank to provide bags of groceries to be distributed at both locations. Kitchen staff and volunteers will prepare more than 140 meals for delivery to the homebound by the Area 10 Agency on Aging. This year’s meal will consist of smoked turkey from KRC and The Rib Shack, green bean casserole, country herbed stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry ambrosia, hot-buttered rolls and homemade pies. Last Thanksgiving, the kitchen provided more than 500 meals and 200 bags of groceries to anyone in need, and the agency is anticipating a larger need this year. Pierce said the Community Kitchen is on target to provide more than 275,000 meals and snacks by the end of 2014. Children make up 54 percent of the Kitchen’s patrons, and another 15 percent are seniors.
