From the International Herald Tribune, July 28, 1938 - Pope Denounces Racial Doctrine ROME — Racialism and extreme nationalism strike at the Church and at the Pope, “and who strikes the Pope dies,” Pope Pius the Eleventh told students of the College for the Propagation of the Faith at Castel Gandolfo yesterday in the most outspoken challenge he has yet made to Fascism’s new doctrine. In a carefully prepared speech which occupies four and a half columns of the front page of the “Osservatore Romano,” the Pope virtually gave a last warning to Fascism to avoid the errors into which Germany had fallen or come into conflict with the Church. He took issue with the Fascists on their own ground, that of the purity of the Latin tradition, saying that the very word race was foreign to it.
