From the King Fire PIO EVENING UPDATE: Size: 97,099 acres Containment: 94% Estimated Containment Date: October 4, 2014 Total Personnel Assigned: 2,364 Current Situation: Due to warmer and drier weather there was an increase in fire behavior today, with more smoke showing in the fire’s interior. Winds gusting from the Northeast/East tonight and continuing through Wednesday morning are expected to make the fire more active, but it is expected to remain within containment lines. Firefighters are using data from heat-sensing aerial photography to locate and extinguish areas of heat remaining within, but close to, the fire perimeter. Helicopters are assisting crews constructing fire line in an active fire area near an unburned island of fuel within the containment line on the southwest portion of the fire. Fire crews continue to remove hazardous trees, chip brush and remove road debris to make roads safe for public travel. All forest roads within the burned area remain closed due to hazardous conditions which are expected to persist for some time. Today crews repaired handline and dozer line constructed during fire suppression activity and removed excess fire equipment such as hose, pumps, and tanks. Firefighters continue mop up and patrol. As containment of the fire has increased and excess firefighting resources are being released, the fire is no longer being managed in two zones. Today at 6:00 PM the team which has been managing Zone 2 of the fire, CIIMT 1 led by Jerry McGowan, assumed management of the entire incident. The King fire is under Unified Command with the Eldorado National Forest and CAL FIRE.
