From the Sleep Naturally chapter of my book 7 Steps to a Naturally Unbridled Life: Any parent of young children can tell you the importance of making sure that the child stays on a regular sleep schedule. A set bedtime, naptime and wake-time, are critical to the contentment of the child and thus the parents. Children aren’t the only ones who benefit from a set sleep schedule. Whenever possible, go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Your body will get into the habit of putting itself to sleep, sleeping effectively and waking refreshed. Have you ever found that if you sleep too late on a weekend that you have trouble getting motivated or getting anything done that day? I refer to this as “sleep toxicity”. It’s not a real diagnosis but I’ve seen enough of it to know it can happen. Ayurvedic practitioners will tell you that waking later in the day, during the “kapha” hours will leave you sluggish and unmotivated. Try being out of bed by 8:00 at the latest; between six and seven o’clock is best.
