From the book POETS OF PORT HENRY HIGH SCHOOL ----- for DEB and PETE OUR FISHING TRIP One Saturday morning my father asked my brother and me if we would like to go fishing. We said, “Yes.” So that afternoon we went down to the lake. We pulled our boat out, and threw our fishing poles out. The water was calm and still. For quite a while no one felt a nibble, but suddenly I felt a bite on my hook and began to reel in my line. Something was tugging on my line so much that I could hardly hold my pole. When it began to come out of the water, we saw that there was a large pickerel at the end of my line. I had him almost landed when he jumped back into the water. I thought my luck had ended, but after that I had a little bite, and pulled up a perch. When we reached the end of the bay we started home. The clouds were getting dark, and we could hear the thunder and see the lightning. It began to rain very hard, and we did not have any slickers. We had started home, but it was hard to row for the wind was blowing against us. The waves were getting high. Finally, we reached the boathouse and put the boat in. Thus ended our fishing trip, and on my way home from the lake I kept thinking how provoked I was over that fish. Clifford Henry, Grade 6 - (1928)
