From the world of science… Vinegar takes on killer.. The fight against cervical cancer just got a fillip. A new, cost-effective test uses the kitchen ingredient to detect it. In contrast to pap smear, the vinegar test is a visual one that does not require a lab. The efficacy of the test lies in its simplicity. The results are known within minutes, and primary health workers can carry it out. A trained primary health worker swabs the woman’s cervix with a solution made of four parts of glacial acetic acid or vinegar and 96 parts of water. A minute later, the cervix is observed in bright light. The acetic acid causes the cancerous or precancerous tumours to turn white.
