Rush (Ron Howard, 2013 with Chris Hemsworth in the lead role) is about Formula 1, but is really about rivalry, life, death and so much more. It was really well executed, the characters were compelling and the story kept me interested. 3.5/5 stars Spring Breakers (Harmony Korine, 2013 with Selana Gomez and James Franco) was a movie I was expecting to hate, but I loved it. Almost the entire movie is shot such that it looks like youre high, but that adds immensely to the movie. Not everyone will like this being that its artsy, but its worth a look. There seems to be so much symbolism and hidden messages beneath the obvious story of growing up and/or making awful decisions. 3.5 stars Inside Llewyn Davis (Coen brothers, 2013 with Oscar Isaac and Justin Timberlake) was not nearly as good as Id expect from the Coen brothers, but was still compelling and interesting. Acting was pretty good, and I really liked the music. Still not sure what to make of it. 2.5 stars The Butler (Lee Daniels, 2013 with Oprah and Forest Whitaker) was supposed to be awesome and just wasnt. Whitaker was great and the story is interesting, but I got bored pretty quickly. Still a worthwhile movie. 2.5 stars Fruitvale Station (Ryan Coogler, 2013 with a bunch of noname actors) was SUPERB and should have gotten at least some kind of nomination. Great riveting story with excellent plot and character development plus really good acting. 4 stars Blue Jasmine (Woody Allen, 2013 with Kate Blanchett) was superbly acted and Blanchett should clearly win the best actress race. Great story, great acting, great everything. Just great. Should have gotten a Best Picture nom (especially over Captain Philips). 4 stars 42 (Brian Helgeland, 2013) was decent but nothing special. Jackie Robinson was an important person and the way the movie portrays the story is good, but really nothing special. 2.5 stars. This is the End (Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg with a bunch of actors playing themselves) was stupid. Like really stupid. They could have done so much better. To be fair, the other, similarly titled The Worlds End (Simon Pegg, 2013 from the guys who brought us Shaun of the Dead), was also stupid, although in a totally different way. Ill give them both 2 stars, but that may be generous. Despicable Me 2 was awesome (although I hear Frozen was better. Still, everyone can appreciate this movie. Watch it. 3.5 stars Ive got a ton more on my list still to watch. Less than a month to go till the Oscars. Ill have my full ballot filled out then.
