Fundamentalists say the darnest things. Here is what an avid creationist--a lawyer out west--wrote on a blog yesterday: Darwinism was invented to make atheism intellectually respectable, and that has always been its primary appeal. If you can get rid of the creator God, you can escape the judgment of said God. And I, of course, could not walk away from such a juicy argument: David, you really--seriously--think so? That Darwin spent his time on the Beagle trying to figure out how he could lead a riotous life and still not face moral accountability? That his science project was just a cover for moral cowardice? Its like listening to right-wingers justifying their callousness toward the poor by claiming that liberalisms campaign for compassion in the political realm is just a cover for wanting to turn the US population into wards of the state. This is so over the top, David, that I can only shake my head. Science is a crusade for knowledge of our world; its not a conspiracy hatched in the bowels of hell in order to release us from our moral obligations. If it had been, you would have expected to see atheists throw morality to the wind. Instead, you see that the most secular nations and parties are the most committed to the public good, while the religious nations and parties fawn on the rich and afflict the poor. In the US, liberals and progressives--many of whom are without religious affiliation or faith--are the ones who want to help the poor. Some strange conspiracy that turns believers into anti-Christians and non-believers into responsible citizens.
