GABE UPDATE: John and I did not leave today to get Gabe in Missouri. We found out last night that he had 2 significant verbal altercations with mentors at Future Men—one of them, turning his back and leaving the room while he was being corrected—saying he was leaving, and no longer needed to listen. This was after a series of similar missteps this week, where he flunked a final exam because he said it didn’t matter and refused to finish a book for his English course. The school has recommended his graduation ceremony be cancelled, he stay another week, he leave his belongings at Future Men, and when he comes home next weekend for a 2-week break, we monitor him and decide whether or not he will return to the school in January. We are heartbroken. John and I spent a good deal of time last night praying and seeking wisdom. For now, Gabe will come home for break by bus. It puts a lot of kinks in the next few days— all of the children are dropped off at a flurry of homes across the state, the meetings we had set up with the college he wants to attend and the apprenticeships where he’s been working are cancelled—but most importantly, he will get his diploma in the mail. That’s the hardest for me. As a homeschooler, there is little finality when you finish high school. At his ceremony, all his co-workers and bosses from his apprenticeships were going to be there—as were John and I, and it breaks my heart that there will not be a chance to see that. We don’t know what tomorrow brings—whether Gabe will be going back in January or not. We don’t know if this was a case of senioritis from a hyperactive kid, or rebellion. We do know, Lord willing, hell appear on a Greyhound bus 4 days before Christmas in Corning for break. One friend was so comforting last night—she said “Gabe didn’t put a pencil in the mentor’s knee, or run away and was found 60 miles away—look at how far he’s come, Sarah.” So I’m holding onto growth today! We have some big decisions to make in the coming weeks, with the direction of our precious Lord and Savior. Please pray. Please share his story. We are relying on our prayer warriors so heavily!
