GIANT MALABAR SQUIRREL at Bondla WLS , Goa Date: 14th Dec 2014. The Malabar giant squirrel is an upper-canopy dwelling species, which rarely leaves the trees, and requires tall profusely branched trees for the construction of nests. It travels from tree to tree with jumps of up to 6 m (20 ft). but when we were winding up our deep forest trek inside the Bondla WLS and came out on the road just before sitting in our vehicle we saw this rare sight of Giant Squirrel coming down the tree trunk very close to our eyes and a golden opportunity to shoot this beauty of the western ghats at a close distance was a once in lifetime opportunity. The species is endemic to deciduous, mixed deciduous, and moist evergreen forests of peninsular India, reaching as far north as the Satpura hill range of Madhya Pradesh.
