GOD-ACCEPTED RELIGION Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. ~ James 1:27 ** I know that, among Christians today, it is trendy to bash the very word religion, but I will not go to that extreme. The reason is our text. If Scripture speaks of religion that God accepts, then I will not oppose Gods word on that notion. I will, however, oppose the brand of religion that God does not accept. This goes for religions that deny Christ as sole savior (1 John 4:3) and for religion that proclaims Christ but bucks at the notion that He is Lord, proved by their lives. Regarding the latter, some Christians will nod approvingly, maybe tossing and occasional amen, if you speak of Christ as the Heaven-getter Savior for us, but they will not respond so approvingly if you speak of Christ invading their lives as Lord. Many times, this latter category is more harmful to Christian work than the former category. C. S. Lewis said of this unsavory religion within true religion, We who defend Christianity find ourselves constantly opposed not by the irreligion of our hearers but by their real religion. When the overwhelming majority of Christians embrace Christ as both Savior and Lord, proved by their lives, as indicated in our text, then Jesus blood-bought church will shine brighter and more effectively in Gospel work. < Chuck >
