GOD artist 26 Alia Bilgrami, Pakistan, GOD 17.78x17.78 cm Tea wash and gouache on handmade wasli paper A turquoise flat square.Whenever I think of God somehow this vibrant greenish turquoise comes to mind – a colour used in Mughal miniatures popularly known during those times as ‘Dana-e-Farang.’ The flatness in this work symbolizes the ambiguity surrounding God and infinity. In Persian literature colors are defined as “the attempt of light to become visible.” This turquoise is like a deep body of water or like the sky. A vast, empty space that could contain everything or nothing at all, depending on how each individual perceives it. Maybe subconsciously I have chosen turquoise because it resonates deeply with spirituality and Sufism and is perhaps ingrained on my soul on a level that I myself do not understand. A square. A perfect shape. Perfection. GOD Alia Bilgrami is a practicing visual artist and curator. She currently works as Curator for Khaas Art Gallery, Islamabad. She continues her own visual practice and exhibits both locally and internationally. She mostly works with drawing, photography and contemporary miniature painting, often combining various labour intensive media.
