GOOD SPORTS MANAGEMENT KEY TO SUCCESS Good sports management is critical for the success of any sports organisation. Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) second vice president, Letsholo Letsholo said this at a sports administration course on October 29. He said sports leaders should be versed in issues of corporate governance, financial and human resources management and they must have the ability to create an enabling environment for all to contribute and grow sports. He told the participants that the course was facilitated through funding from Olympic Solidarity programme, an arm of the International Olympic Committee. The programmes, he said assists National Olympic Committees with greatest needs such as BNOC, to develop structures that favour the development of sport in their respective countries. He further said the course is aimed at advancing sports development and leaders as premised on the Olympic ideals. “From this course, you will appreciate that Olympism promotes sports for all, irrespective of gender, social or religious background,” he said. Letsholo said therefore every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport in the Olympic spirit which requires mutual understanding, friendship, solidarity and fair play. Sport, he said is a tool used to promote common understanding among individuals, therefore as sport administrators, they should ensure that they embrace team work so that they benefit their federation. He said individualism will instead fuel mistrust and frustrate their collective efforts to build sporting organisation that embrace all members. “Respect for oneself, one’s body, for others, regulations and for sport and the environment is an important value,” he said. Letsholo further urged participants to discourage anti-competitive behaviour such as doping, and they must be vigilant and promote clean sport at all time. He said as leaders it is important to accommodate divergent views, to ensure that sport is clean and abide to the constitution and regulations that governs their respective federations. He warned them that, sport leadership at all levels has come under intense scrutiny, given that federations are requested to account for their actions and decisions, therefore knowledge on the management of sporting organisations is very critical. “Effective communication and engagement with stakeholders is critical, conflict resolution mechanism is important to resolve issues, bring everyone in your federation on board.” The course facilitator, Moses Moruisi said the main objective of the course was to equip sports administrators with the necessary skills so that participates are in a very good position to run their organisation diligently.
