GOVERNMENT CALLS FOR EQUALITY IN DEVELOPMENT Written by Joseph Josiah and Grace Majiga Every Malawian irrespective of differences in political party allegiance is entitled to equal share of government-initiated development projects, Local Government and Rural Development Deputy Minister Augustine Mtendere made the observation Friday. Mtendere made the remarks at Zyalambe Teacher Development Centre in the area of T/A Kapelula in Kasungu on the sidelines of the official launch of Kapelula Grain Legume Association. He urged people in the district to put their political party differences aside and instead collaborate in development projects to help current government achieve its drive of poverty eradication. “Development projects initiated by government are meant to benefit all Malawians. There should, therefore, never be discrimination on the basis of differences in party affiliations because this government belongs to us all,” advised Mtendere who is also parliamentarian for the area. Mtendere is among 40 former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) parliamentarians who announced their defection to the ruling People’s Party (PP) soon after the death of the founder of the DPP President Bingu wa Mutharika on April 5 2012. Meanwhile, Grain Legume Association (GALA) President Fredrick Manyenje said the Kapelula Association has brought together 20 soya farmers clubs from across the area with the aim to improve production and help farmers get fair price for their crop. “Our mission is to promote grain legumes, improve production and provide a direct link between farmers and profitable markets to benefit the small scale grain legume farmers in Malawi,” explained Manyenje. He announced the association’s plans to construct a grain legume storage warehouse in the area as one way of promoting collective production and marketing while helping reduce post-harvest losses that arise due to poor storage. Established in 2010, GALA is currently operational in Nkhotakota, Ntchisi, Dowa and Kasungu.
