GOV’T TO RESETTLE LANDSLIDE VICTIMS Each house hold to receive 2.5 acres of land Government has finalised the procurement of land meant to resettle the people of the Elgon region starting with the most vulnerable. This has been revealed by State Minister for Relief & Disaster Preparedness, Musa Ecweru, today during the weekly press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister. Ms. Simu Oil Ltd, Ms Godfrey Manana, Mutubusi & Patrick Watika and Ms. Ochow George Wilson & Christine Ochow emerged as the successful bidders and are to supply government with 2,828 acres of land, in Bunambutye sub-county, lower Bulambuli district at a cost of Shs 8bn. The contracts were cleared by the Auditor General and are to be counter signed between them and the Office of the Prime Minister paving way for the immediate transfer of the said land to government. Each house hold is set to receive 2.5 acres of land. State Minister for Relief & Disaster Preparedness, Musa Ecweru, said that government’s plan is to resettle all the people within a time frame of three months starting 1st September. “In a nutshell, what we are going to do, is to remove all the people in risky areas (Mount Elgon) and take them to these areas.” He said. He therefore appealed to local leaders and communities in the upper Elgon region to support the forthcoming process.
