GRAVITY is shiny and shallow. Bullock & Clooney were fighting a marginal script and a green screen the whole time. It plays like a CGI obsticle course, which is fine if all you expect is video game level theatre. Remember when she drove the bus and hit the stroller full of cans? That felt real. It was great drama. When she cried in GRAVITY, she was upstaged by fake floating tears. (Too much plastic surgery isnt helping) Clooney was shooting for a calm cool, but came off flat. No moment of fear? Please. We walked in buying the hype, and suffered from anticipointment. It reminded me of how I felt when the prequels came out and Yoda was no longer a puppet played by a master performer, existing in real space and time, and sharing actual interaction with actors, each reacting to the others nuances in the moment. Lucas fixed it til it broke. CGI Yoda sucks and so does this movie, but we seem as a culture to be perfectly willing to forgive the sacrifice of believable performance for spectacle. Spectacle wears off. It took about 20 minutes for me. What a triumph of technicality - SO WHAT! This Is The End had computer animation and special effects almost as good, but with 100 times the heart, brains, and emotion. And Seth Rogan will be overlooked at the Oscars for his achievement. Bleh.
