Galileo Galilei died on this day in 1642. He is regarded as one of the greatest scientists of all time. He is most well known for significantly updating the telescope, discovering Jupiter’s moons, phases of Venus, and his support of theory of heliocentrism, which stated that Earth revolved around the sun and not the other way around. His assertion of the theory led to him being tried twice for heresy, with the second trial of 1633 resulting in house arrest for the remainder of his life. This conviction was overturned in 1992.
