George Washington Ripley was born 8 Aug, 1834 in Champaign Co, Ohio where he lived until he was transported to Logan Co, Illinois by his father in about 1843 to be indentured to learn the milling trade. My Grandmother said that the miller Isaac Braucher was a hard taskmaster, so I can imagine a young boys frustration at being abandoned there. He didnt get much formal schooling but he was a smart man and a man who loved his family. He and Martha Jane Downing grew up together and , living on opposite sides of the creek where the mill stood, they used to meet at Brauchers Bridge to court. They were married in Mount Pulaski, Logan County, Illinois by a Justice of the Peace named Jacob Reame on the 12 of Oct, 1854 and Martha Jane used to tell her grandchildren that they always remembered their wedding day on a sunny but nippy October day with fondness. When the Civil War came, they had 2 children, my great grandfather Lewie Scott Ripley and his sister Florence, George enlisted on the 22 of August, 1861 in Lincoln, Illinois, in Co, B, 32nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. When he finished his basic he was already a Sargeant. They recogmized his leadership SKILLS EARLY.
