A semi-final (that is, the four best teams in the tournament) in which one team trounces the other by six goals. But not just any team: the host. And not just any host: Brazil, with all its history, and all its expectations, and all its star power. Brazil does indeed get the maracanazo, and then some. Had they lost 2-1, it might have been forgotten, dismissed, excused by the Neymar injury. Not anymore. This defeat will be legendary, as legendary as that defeat was in 1950. In 50 years, people will still be talking about his match, and you can say you witnessed it. The dissection of the defeat and the blame-game is only just beginning and undoubtedly will go on for weeks. But let us also not forget the other side of the coin. The Brazilian collapse was complemented by a German team that played very well, that took advantage of the numerous mistakes with ease and even flair. A lesser team might not have done as well against the legendary collapse. The Germans did, and now they are in the final. In retrospect, the US 1-0 loss to Germany doesn’t look so bad. When the Netherlands trounced Spain 4-2 in the fist week of the Cup, and then Germany 4-0 against Portugal a few days later, we all knew we were in for some entertaining soccer. But nothing could have prepared us for something this spectacular. I’m not saying it was great soccer; it wasn’t. But lord, it was spectacular!
