Germany was brilliant by the way. That place is an authors dream. I will bore you senseless about it over the next two days. Ill start by telling you about Leipzig. They have a book fair there. It is more of a festival, really, as - unlike in Frankfurt - the emphasis is on readers and authors. But dont think of a UK book festival with their narrow demographics. We are talking young and old, male and female. Teens, twentysomethings, oldies, newbies, suits, Manga costumes. Life, colour. Anyway, I did an event there in an old hall a mere stones throw from the church where Bach used to be choir master. It was a beautiful old fairytale type place. Nearly 400 people crowded into the hall for my event. People sitting on the floors and standing at the back. It was probably the most magical event Ive ever done. Rufus Beck - famed in Germany for doing the Harry Potter audio - read from The Humans (Ich und die Menschen) and people laughed in the right places. Günter Keil was my interviewer - and is one of the nicest people you could meet. Then afterwards we walked under a near-full moon to a very nice restaurant, talking to my lovely German editor Kristina Arnold and the super Christine Püffel. Wish youd been there. Heres a pic of me enjoying myself despite two hours sleep:
